Hi! This is Car Design Academy.

The guest today is Mr. Hirofumi Ishizaki, who has designed and launched Daihatsu’s signature cars in the last 30 years. For those who are not familiar with the car maker, Daihatsu, please take a minute to go through the introduction of Daihatsu.

Daihatsu Motor Co, (Daihatsu hereafter) was established in 1907, based in Osaka, Japan. It is currently a subsidiary company of Toyota. Daihatsu is specialized for development and production of small cars. Particularly strong at manufacturing so-called Keijidousha, Kei-Car, Light Car. Kei means “light/small” in Japanese. Kei-Car is a legal category, define the size of a car precisely and engine size of less than 660 cc. Consumers can enjoy tax incentives and less insurance premium requirement for Kei-Car. Daihatsu is a leading company in this Kei category here in Japan. Daihatsu’s annual sales exceed 12 billion US dollars, or 10 billion Euro. Today’s guest Mr. Ishizaki has contributed to all Kei-car development projects in the last 3 decades. Daihatsu is expanding its market share not only in Japan but also Malaysia and Indonesia. The below is the link to Daihatsu Web Page English Version. http://www.daihatsu.com/index.html

Hirofumi Ishizaki= born in Matsuyama, Japan, in 1952. He went to Aiko School which has been a famous academically high-level school. After he graduated, he enrolled Chiba University, majored Engineering, Industrial Design Dept. He graduated there in 1975 and joined Honda, and worked for the development of second generation CIVIC and QUINT. In 1981, he was headhunted by Daihatsu. Today, he is a director for the International Design Department. He has a Car Design class in Kobe Design University. The picture is his favorite car COPEN, which he designed and completed its project.

In his junior high school days, he had already wanted to be a Car Designer, however, in those days car designing was not acknowledged profession in Japan broadly. One day he was reading a car magazine and found a Toyota designer name, Mr. Yaegashi. He called the magazine editorial office whether they can give him an address of Mr. Yaegashi. He wanted to ask which university he had better go to seek a car designer special courses. Kindly enough, the editors gave him Toyota Motor business address, and he wrote a letter attention Mr. Yaegashi. A few weeks later, Mr. Yaegashi replied by mail and gave him 10 names where he thought good names to go. At the end of letter, Mr. Yaegashi wrote that he graduated Chiba University. Mr. Ishizaki immediately decided to go to Chiba University without any hesitation. Interestingly, although he did not get any skill training at Chiba University, he was rather encouraged to gain more broader knowledge.

After college education, he was recruited by Honda. There he met many designers, for those future leading designers in Japan. Like, Kurihara, in Nori Inc., Matsuzawa of Honda. A several years of service in Honda, he had a chance to develop Second Generation Civic, flagship car for Honda in those days, but he was not satisfied. One day he met Mr. Nishino, a director of Daihatsu coincidently. Ishizaki told Mr. Nishino that he was very much admired the design and concept of Daihatsu’s new model at that time, called Charade, actually Mr. Nishino was responsible for launching this model. Mr. Nishino asked Ishizaki whether he was happy with the job at Honda. Ishizaki replied honestly, “No.” Very soon, he was headhunted by Daihatsu.

Ishizaki says that good thing about Daihatsu was the company was small and open, and he got a good support from the management. He has involved in designing all Kei-Car those Daihatsu launched after revision of government specification for Kei-Car, such as First Generation OPTI, MOVE, NAKED, TANTO, and COPEN.

—-Please tell us about your period in Honda.—–

HONDA

Daihatsu Charade wikipedia

CHARADE: A first generation of Charade was released in 1977. It’s concept was ” 5 Square Meter Car.” It was very different and unique from existing models of other Japanese car makers. It was the first ONE LITTRE Car in Japan, epoch-making model.

—Is the first generation OPTI your first major work at Daihatsu? —

We launched the design concept of OPTI as [Moving Art]. Our attempt was to produce a Kei-Car which will grab consumers’ hearts.

It was exactly the opposite concept of MIRA, its concept was Rationalism, which was the market mainstream in those days.

OPTI’s image was just like Craft Work, gives drivers a warm fitting to their hands.

I strongly believe that it is very important to look stable for small size car.

The style of OPTI was stable looking, the overall shape looked like flipping coffee cup. I wanted car looks as if its Center of Gravity located at the bottom of the car.

In addition to that, I did not want to use Relief in my design.

I was only able to express Craftsmanship by curving surface with tension.

gazo1212

Daihatsu Opti wikipedia

First Generation OPTI debuted in 1992 as an upper grade model of MIRA, which has been the most sold model in Daihatsu. OPTI was accepted market enthusiastically.

–Kei Car has the very detailed specification requirement, so cannot take too much curved surface, as it will decrease passenger space, which is already small, right?.—

Yes, you are right. Because the Kei-Car size is small, it is very difficult to express design intention by curved surface tension, as curved surface will reduce passenger space. Most of my colleagues told me that is not possible.

But I did not like to use Relief to express design intention.

In order to create tension on the surface under such a limited environment, I tried to produce tensions without adding Relief with our top modeler. That is how OPTI’s design was born. Really worked together with this skillful modeler.

This has become a DNA for designing COPEN.

In another word, COPEN was sitting on the summit of all those challenges which OPTI has done.

gazo11

COPEN: Daihatsu’s 2-Seater Sports Car! Since its debut in 2002, Copen has achieved 100% of production estimate consistently every year. In 2012, they released limited 10th Anniversary Edition, and Ishizaki bought his own as his commemoration of his work. Right side sketch was done by Yoshihiro Yamamoto, the chief designer.

–Which car do you feel most impressive among your works?–

For me that is NAKED. I have to say that Kei-Car is classified more or less in the lower side of car hierarchy in the market. I am bit afraid that this statement may cause some misunderstanding.

In general, the high grade, big car is ranked in the high side of car hierarchy. Many people tend to think that Kei-Car is sold because of its economics. But I wanted buyers to say “This car is far better than others, that is why I bought this.”

A kind of Good excuse to buy Kei-Car.

—So what you are saying is you wanted consumer bought Kei-Car not because of its economics, but seriously wanted the Car.—

Yes, you are right. Not because of negative excuse, but more positive motivation to buy the car. I wanted to produce that kind of Kei-Car.

At that time, our Product Planning Department launched the new concept of ” Men’s Car”

However, I could not transform that concept on the sketch sheet for a while, I was not able to visualize the image.

Then I happened to drive near Mt. Fuji, and saw a armored car, just like Hammer.

That military car gave me an inspiration.

The idea was “the car is just for fun”. No need to shine.

No need to handle with a serious care. Just like kicking doors to close. You sometimes see the scene in the American movies.

No need to worry about getting dirty or dent. My image was just like that.

NAKED realized that kind of concept. I drove it for 12 years. Took out back seats and stored my bicycle.

I am not a kind of person who keep clean and shine high end luxury car.

I do not want to worry about scratch or minor dents during driving my car.

I wanted to realize the benefit of owning small cars. I wanted buyers to feel that there is such an interesting car in Kei-Car. And I am proud of myself to produce such a kind of car, NAKED.

NAKED: Ishizaki confessed that a car before the painting was closest realizing the concept. But, of course, you need to paint, so gave up that idea of not painting. Released in 1997, as Motor Show special model. Received a good welcome from both market and media. And Daihatsu finally released NAKED as a mass production model. It’s styling was tough looking, unique to appear the image of materials. The name of NAKED was also given by Ishizaki.

–Could you kindly give some advice to students who is anxious to become a Car Designer?–

Let me tell you that students in the architect field start studying the past works in history. On the other hand, car design students are not paying too much attention to their predecessors’ works.

I believe the car design is also the accumulation of the history, just like architectures. Nothing can be produced without understanding history, accumulation of past works.

Please visit Automobile Museum, and look each of them carefully for both GOOD cars and NO GOOD cars. And think why this one is GOOD, how they were developed. Think why this one is NO GOOD, why this one was not accepted by consumers? And think if you were designer, what would you do?

Mazda Luce (nameplate was replaced by the Mazda Sentia name in 1991) which designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, and the Isuzu PIAZZA (also known as the Isuzu Impulse in the United States) are still beautiful designs today even after 30 years. We cannot build tomorrow without learning such a great works.

—There were cars which opened New Era.—

Yes, I think so, too. At the same time, I think there is only a slight difference between such an epoch-making car and bizarre car. Take a look at the Fiat MULTIPLA. It has Originality.

800px-Fiat_Multipla_front_20080825

That car was not successful from a commercial view point, but I like it.

「Ugly is Beautiful(アグリー イズ ビューティフル)」と表現していました。

An editor from AUTO CAR expressed Alfa Romeo SZ (Sprint Zagat) as “Ugly is Beautiful.”

800px-Alfa_Romeo_SZ

It inspires me that in the Car Design world something else other than general rule exist.

It is on the verge of good/bad design, however, it attracts me.

It fascinates me maybe because I cannot design like that.

Before, I was working the project with Ercole Spada, he was a chief designer of I.DE.A in those days. One day he invited me to his home during the project.

He talked to me, “Giugiaro designs Perfect.”

And, he continued, “But, if a man is perfect, then you feel that person is not fun.”

There are two cars in Alfa Romeo, CANGURO and GIULIA TZ2.

Looking at CANGURO from every angle, there is no room for critics. That is Giugiaro’s perfect design.

On the other hand, TZ2 is designed by Ercole Spada.

It is full of Originality, and even can say it is aggressive. Can be expressed as ” Savage”. But to be honest with you, both cars really thrills me.

CANGULO and TZ2 were produced by using common chassis.

As a car designer student, you should learn these as well.

By the way, he told me that the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato was his design. I told him that car was a shocking to me when I was young.

He looked happy when he heard what I said. And the he brought his sketch which he wrote at that time, and gave it to me. It is our family treasure now.

ercolespada

Elcole Spada: a designer who had been active on the front lines since the golden age of CARROZZERIA ZAGATO in 1960s. He often worked with Giorgetto Giugiaro and Marcello Gandini. They created a base of auto car design today. At the I.DE.A, he worked on the Fiat TIPO, the Lancia Dedra, and the Alfa Romeo 155 (Type 167).

—Can you share with us how do you create a new design or concept?—

I often say to my student, there is always a hint in your daily life.

You’ve got to look at what interests you with your both eyes wide open. And Concentrate! Not just seeing.

Then, a hint comes out from your routine lives.

–How was the case, when you designed “NAKED”?—

It really depends on your sense. If you see the Self Defense armed vehicle passing nearby, and then ” yeah, that is armed vehicle “and let it go, or triggers you to think “yes, this can be transformed to commercial vehicle.”

The NAKED Project initiated from my sketch which was drawn at home during my summer holidays.

I am, if anything, a type of designer who does not start to draw until my idea firms up. Until then, I keep thinking and thinking.

Both OPTY and the first generation MOVE sketch were drawn on the first day of their projects.

Designers draw a hundreds of sketches, but it often happens that the first sketch is the best.

And funny thing is that there is a case even you draw 100 designs, you still cannot come up the one you will get satisfied.

Daihatsu TANTO: a new genre of Kei car. It was introduced in 2003 to realize a concept of “A Space for Happy Family.” Its spacious and useful design got huge support from younger families. TANTO was accepted as “mom’s wagon,” , and became Daihatsu’s one of the most sold Kei-Car. TANTO means “so spacious, so much” in Italian.

“The time is the final judgment” Eiji Hayashi gave me the quote when the first TANTO was developed.

The first generation TANTO development adopted a method called, “Design Clinic.” We showed several ideas to the general public, and received their feed back. However, we chose the worst feed back car, because we wanted to choose that one.

At that time, Mr. Hayashi, long time supporter of my works, currently a Honorary Consultant of Bridgestone Cycle, encouraged me when he heard that we chose what we wanted , “Time will judge your decision whether it was good or bad after 10 years. So, your choice is not wrong at all at this point.”

The time is the final judge.

—So that means, it is important to learn from the past—

 That’s right.

Let me tell you. You practice many sketch, you can draw many images. Of course, that is nothing you should be boast of.

Everybody else does, everyone can do that! That is a minimum requirement. You’ve got to work hard.

You also need to study other than sketching.

Math, Japanese, English, History, Designs prevailed in the past,,, You have to study everything which can raise your capability as a car designer.

Getting knowledge from TV and Internet is far from satisfactory.

TV, which you will get knowledge in a passive manner, which will not become your meat and bone.

If you are doing net surfing, that will not add values to you.

This industry has been changing all the time.

Since Mr. Yaegashi’s (I sent the letter to him when I was young) time, it has started. The famous designers who were older than me made histories of the car design, and 10 years later from them are our generation.

The work environment from our predecessors and present situation is completely different. More people are involving, more division of labors are developing.

It may be difficult for students or general people to get an image how the R&D is conducting in auto-makers. A numerous process is required. That is why I encourage you to study a lot for other than sketches. Sketching is minimum skill required. Unless you are armed with general knowledge, you cannot persuade layout team or performance group. Even among designer group. You cannot get defeated by drawing sketch, either during discussion, and/or idea creations.

You have to inject a lot of efforts to brush up all kinds of abilities in order to overcome difficulties.

Drawing sketch is only a start point. You have to draw your futures as if you can do sketch now.

You cannot persuade other people who are in the project unless you communicate, insist, and get their full support. By only showing them your sketch is not sufficient.

I believe that you’ve got your ambitious very high, telling yourself if you do the same thing as other people do, that is unsatisfactory.

Editor’s Note

How did you find the story of Mr. Ishizaki, isn’t it interesting?

I admire his passion to become a Good Designer. People only tend to focus a fancy life of car designer, but he encourages you acquiring various knowledge and raising your ability as a human being (at least as a business person). During the course of development, designer will need to communicate, discuss, and negotiate with directors, performance designers, and layout group. It is really a tough process. That is why he kept stressing that drawing good sketch is a minimum requirement. You have a lot of things to do.
